Meet the artist - EERGH

Newcastle artist, EERGH puts their creativity into words, using the classic graffiti style as a jumping off point to create lettering and typography in their own recognisable style. Describing themself as a ‘self-taught doodler’, EERGH’s tag can be found across the city, as well as on prints.

EERGH is one of the artists we worked with to curate and build the Meet The Artist - Graffiti Bundle, filled with 32 markers plus a premium marker pad, so you can take a walk on the wild side to explore graffiti art for yourself!

Meet the Artist - EERGH

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background as an artist

I’m an artist from Newcastle upon Tyne and I go by the name, EERGH. People always ask, why EERGH and if it has any particular meaning. And the short answer is no! Those were my favourite letters to draw back when I started doodling and I thought it looked cool.

I’ve always been into drawing and remember as a kid, trying to come up with ideas and things to draw. Naturally, I started writing my name and then other words and haven’t stopped since! From this I started to notice letters and lettering on anything from shop signs, billboards, road lettering and then graffiti.

What inspires you and where do you look for inspiration?

Being from Newcastle, graffiti was and has always been a big part of the culture here. So, I would say this has been my biggest inspiration, watching other artists and trying to find a style that stands out. I would describe my style these days as a mash up of my love for graffiti and the traditional graffiti style letters, combined with the art of sign writing.

Which medium do you work with the most and why?

From about 2011 I have used markers, and I picked up my first spray can in 2014. I would say about 80% of my work is still created using markers as I find that’s the easiest way to achieve my desired results. Over the years I have discovered a certain way of using markers which works for me, and I feel like I have a process which makes my work stand out as EERGH.

What advice would you give aspiring artists?

My top tip for any aspiring artist whether It be as a graffiti artist, whether doing it as a hobby or as a professional designer, is just to be different and try to stand out as much as you can. Always try new things while staying true to your own recognisable style.
