Coloring Sun-kissed Skin

Hello to all.  In this tutorial I am going to share with you how I create glowing, tanned skin with my Spectrum Noir markers and blendable pencils. It is the perfect touch for your summertime card making!

I have used the fabulous digital image ‘Toe in the Sand’ from Saturated Canary for this tutorial.

Step 1

Print your image onto your preferred cardstock (here, I have used Neenah Classic Crest). Use a draft print setting, so that the image is not overloaded with ink.

When the ink is dry, all areas of skin were given a base coat of Spectrum Noir marker FS2.

Step 2

The face and upper body were colored using FS4, TN2, TN4, FS6. The darker shades were used where most shadow would fall and blended out using the lighter color tones.

To create a central paler color the Blender Pen was used, where light would naturally fall. For this creation, this will be the central area.

FS6 creates her rosy cheeks and adds definition to the TN2 and TN4.

Step 3

For coloring the legs, add FS4 and TN2 for detail and blend these out with FS2 to create a smooth color gradient.

Step 4

Add further definition to the leg shape with TN4 and FS6. These markers are used round the outside of the leg as shown, in areas where there would be more shade and detail.

FS2 and FS4 are then used to blend out obvious lines. The Blender Pen was used to create a smooth color flow and central paler area.

Step 5

Color the second leg in the same manner.

Step 6

The skin coloring is now complete, using your Spectrum Noir markers. For this tutorial I have provided further definition using Spectrum Noir blendable pencils.

Pencils  90 and 96 were used to add shadow and depth to the edges of the image, where natural shadow would occur. These were blended using 03.

To create an overall smooth flow of skin color,  areas were all blended using Blending Solution applied with paper stumps.

Lips were colored using 27 and cheeks given a healthy glow with 23.

Step 7

The rest of the image and background were colored and the image is complete.

List of Spectrum Noir markers and pencils used:

Skin: FS2, FS4, FS6,TN2, TN4, 03, 23, 27, 90, 96

Hair: GB1-2, 90, 92

Surf Board: LG1-3, LY1, OR1-2, CR6, CR9, 46

This is the finished card. I hope you like it and that my tutorial has provided some coloring inspiration.
